An Easy, Comfortable Procedure
So, with wisdom tooth removal I really rely on unconscious sedation, to rely on the pharmacology of having patients, even patients that aren’t necessarily anxious about going through the procedure. Typically, wisdom teeth, most patients do have three to four wisdom teeth, so we’re working in multiple areas of the mouth. It can be a little more time consuming because of the number of areas we’re working in. So, I really find that patients do extremely well when we can utilize a combination of an antianxiety medication and nitrous oxide, just because patient’s, they’re not asleep, they’re controlling their own breathing, they’re awake, but they are just so relaxed that we’re able to get through the appointment very efficiently. And I think, in addition, it allows me, as the surgeon, to limit the amount of force I have to use because the patient’s relaxed and we’re able to make that appointment again much quicker and efficient. So, it really in turn helps with the healing. Patients do a phenomenal job with wisdom teeth when they’re healing, in the postoperative care with patients that I have treated there’s very little need for postoperative pain medication. We try and be very informative on postoperative care as well, so patients know very much what to expect when they come in and we try to do a very good job communicating what to expect after the fact. So, we want patients to understand that they play a very active role in their recovery, as far as taking anti inflammatory medications, icing, resting, those things that we know from, not only research, but from our own evidence and own experience, make a big difference how well patients recover and we want patients to have a good recovery, because it also is going to show well on us, so we took good care of them.
